BLUE MOUNTAIN 13. FIVE OFEST
What’s in a name? Only beer conforming to the "Stammwürze" law, which states a beer must have an Original Gravity of 13.5° Plato, can be served at Oktoberfest in Munich. Our version uses the eponymous Munich malt along with Vienna and German Pilsener malt; it is hopped exclusively with noble Hallertau- variety hops. Malty flavors blend with perfectly balanced hop character to make our festbier a highly drinkable lager. Dast Bier ist Wunderbar!

CABERNET FRANC 2015
A favorite among wineries in Virginia, Cabernet Franc is a grape that really showcases Virginia climate and soil conditions that are optimal for growing a spicy, fruit forward Cabernet. It’s like an aroma potpourri of floral and spice, then fills the mouth with dried fruit and preserves reminiscent of a nutty fruitcake, ending with a smooth, caramel chocolate truffle finish.

Amazing Grace Vineyard Viognier has been a First Colony staff and customer favorite since its debut vintage in 2015. In part, that is thanks to the varietal itself. Virginia Viognier picked fully ripe produces a wine possessed of an exotic, seductive perfume and broad, voluptuous stone fruit character that is difficult to resist. And certainly, in those respects our 2017 Viognier is true to type. Leaping from the glass with musky, floral aromatics of honeysuckle, mayflower, and donut peach, the wine is rich and unctuous, with pear and peach flavors predominating on the palate. What sets this wine apart, however, is its unusual sense of place, also known as terroir character. Where many of its brethren are rather one-dimensionally fruity, First Colony's Viognier is further complicated by an intense, granitic minerality that serves to lift and enliven its palate. Pair with scallops over risotto and drink any time now-2020.
First Colony’s 2017 Riesling Reserve represents an exceptional improvement upon this wine’s maiden vintage in 2017, owing both to a better vineyard source and a truly remarkable growing season. Initially somewhat reticent in the glass, the wine blossoms with several minutes of aeration, displaying zesty, head-turning aromas of Kaffir lime, lemon pith, and wet stone. The palate is linear and sheer, with mouth-watering citrus fruit and shimmering minerality that practically beg for another sip. After several days an open bottle begins to show even more complexity, taking on herbaceous, floral tones of wisteria and pennyroyal that fan out of the finish like a peacock’s tail, suggesting that the wine will benefit enormously from several years of aging.
First Colony's 2017 Rose fits neatly into the stylistic mold established by the 2016 vintage of this wine. Possessed of a vibrant, saturated pink color, its aromatics are perhaps a little brighter and better defined than in years past, with notes of ruby red grapefruit, blood orange, and spring flowers that gain strength with aeration. On the palate the wine is dry but intensely fruit-forward, cutting a riper profile than the nose, with gushy flavors of strawberry, watermelon, and cantaloupe pushing through to a crisp, cleansing finish. Drink now. Like, right now. Yes, yes, I know, you're at work. But seriously. Right now.
In 2015 the Silver Doctor stands out for its vivid, spicy aromatics, redolent of cinnamon, cardamom, and white pepper, as well as its luxuriant, velvety mouthfeel. In 2015 these two sites ripened their fruit uncommonly early, before the remains of hurricane Joaquin slammed into the mid-Atlantic region, and as a result the wine shows a fine, silken texture, even at this early age. While there’s little question that it will continue to improve over the next three to four years in bottle, the 2015 Silver Doctor is already too delicious to resist, packed as it is with jammy strawberry and black cherry flavors and totally absent any astringency. Drink now-2021.
